"September Bird and Turtle Release Report"
Posted: October 7, 2009
In early September, two royal terns joined a group of their kin south of access Rd #1 on the Mustang Island Gulf beach. The baby especially soared royally in the breeze for a long time before settling down with the others. A Chuck Will's Widow went off at dusk the same day on the UT grounds and another was rescued from a cluttered Port Aransas garage after a long stumbling back-and-forth with a net trying to get her out of the rafters. A Common Yellowthroat that flew into an uncommon store window was revived and sent on her migratory journey.
The baby Black-necked Stilt was first carried into the alligator-infested reeds adjacent to the Port Aransas Birding Center but after a ten minute slog on treacherous footing the releaser had to recover the bird as the terrain turned out to be completely unsuitable for the novice stilt's survival. After holding the stilt in one hand while trying to reassemble the carrier in the other
- and hearing imaginary alligators converging - a more suitable place was found. Several hours later near dusk, baby BNS had been joined by several others but I'm not sure he knows he's a stilt. We will monitor this bird closely.
In turtle news, a green sea turtle named Lemon II (the second green found this year entangled in a mass of stuff that included a ReaLemon plastic container used as a fishing float) and another named Nub (whose right front limb literally fell off after getting it entangled in fishing line) were released from the UT Pier area in mid-September.

Also released were Boudreaux and Amanda, both hawksbill sea turtles. Loggerheads Rex, Iggy, and Brady were released near a platform where they will be able to feed on the organisms associated with the rig.

"Most Ambitious Public Turtle Release"
Posted: September, 2009
The Animal Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) had its most ambitious rehabilitated sea turtle release to-date on Saturday 5th September 2009. Four
large loggerhead sea turtles went into the sea at Marker 35 on Mustang Island Gulf Beach. Marker 35 is 0.9 miles south of Gulf Access Road #1 next to the Pioneer R/V Park Walkway over the dunes. Each of these turtles weighs in at more than
100 lb.
The ARK has treated an unprecedented number of large loggerheads recently. It takes months to get them ready for release (One, named Bette, had been with us for 17 months!). Each of them consume up to 30 large squid every day.

"Judy's Journey Ends Mysteriously"
Posted: April 23, 2009
Everyone was all smiles and filled with hope on April
5th, the day of Judy's release, as seen in this photo from the event.
Unfortunately those hopes came to a sad and mysterious end on
April 21st when Judy was found dead near Mile Marker 9 on Padre Island
National Seashore.
Wildlife authorities found cuts to the turtle's
trachea and a flipper, but are not sure exactly why Judy died.

"Judy's Going Home"
Updated: April 7, 2009
UPDATED RELEASE INFORMATION: A new release date was set for Sunday, April 5, between
3 and 5 pm at mile Marker 35 on the beach. Unfortunately due to high winds on Sunday, Judy was unable to be released on time. Her satellite tag has been affixed and she is
now scheduled to depart Mustang Island on her journey home from MM 35 at
1 pm on Tuesday April 7. Please call 361-332-6361 for updates.
Judy is a 120-lb Loggerhead sea turtle who was stranded September 17, 2008 on Padre Island National Seashore and is being rehabilitated at the ARK in Port Aransas, TX.
She will be fitted with the satellite tag and released on Mustang
Island. The satellite tag will allow us to track her future journeys
for up to 450 days and then it will fall off.
The Friends of the ARK
was able to raise the $2000 for the satellite tag for Judy thanks to a
final fundraising push at a booth that was set up at the Family Center
IGA in Port Aransas on Monday March 30th.
Once Judy enters the ocean, a signal will be
transmitted each time she surfaces. Everyone is invited to track Judy
through the following Internet site: http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/.
The travels of Judy and Slabby, a loggerhead released last year by the ARK,
as well as turtles from around the world, can be monitored
from this site.
Watch our Friends of the ARK website for more
information on this exciting, educational event!

"Tony Rescues a Bald Eagle"
Updated: January 23, 2009
An alleged Bald Eagle was sitting on the road in Tivoli on Wednesday afternoon (1/07/09) in some sort of
distress, when he was spotted by a concerned citizen, who called Tony to the rescue. Ninety miles later, Tony
confirmed it was truly a Bald Eagle and drove another 90 miles back to Oso Creek Animal Hospital to place
the bird in the tender loving care of Dr. Tim Tristan and Amanda Terry, Registered Vet Technician.
Xavier Harrison was dispatched to PetCo to buy the largest crate they had and two tennis balls which needed
to be placed in the bird's talons and taped for safety during the exam. Lee Harrison arrived with camera in hand
to photograph this majestic bird while Kiii Channel 3 filmed the exam. The story is slated to be featured as the
lead story in the evening telecast and be repeated the next morning.
Here are of few photos:

Click to see a larger image.
Marsha Owen, who is tending the eagle, named him Sam. At last report, Sam, who weighed in at seven
pounds, is resting comfortably at the ARK. At this time, we are still not sure what's wrong, but fascinating
x-rays show nothing broken. Lab results may show more clues.
It was quite an exciting afternoon!
UPDATE
Below are photos of x-rays from Dr. Tim's examination.
As the last x-ray shows, there are apparently not broken bones in the
wing. Click each photo to see a larger image.
